I made a pleasantly difficult decision in sending an offer to someone for the gig list internship at Rhythm Changes this week. Too many good candidates applied. I've heard it doesn't always go that way, so I'm feeling lucky.
It's hard to pin down why I chose the person I did. I feel great about the choice and probably would have felt the same about at least two other applicants.
I guess you can't ever really know in advance when you hire someone. Certainly I've disappointed people who have hired me for things, but I know I've also surprised some others with the evolution of our relationships.
Admittedly, the main reason I designed the gig list internship was to structure the process of making such a list in general, such that in the future I might be able to clone it into other cities and/or genres of music. That'll happen as a matter of course, regardless of how this internship goes, so it's all good.
