Here's an endearingly healthy attitude toward a show with lower-than-expected attendance, courtesy of the Rogue Folk Club in Kitsilano and its director Steve Edge:
The Rogue took a bit of a proverbial "bath" last weekend at the fabulous Kym Gouchie concert. Such a shame, as those present rated it amongst the most memorable and enthralling concerts they had ever been privileged to witness. Indeed, one of our stalwart volunteers told Kym that she was his favourite new discovery since hearing Joni Mitchell in California in 1967!
That concert may have put a big dent in our finances, but we will persevere, as we believe that music is an essential service, and nothing touches the soul like folk music in its myriad forms.
Just take a look at our Concert Calendar to see a long list of performer names you may, perhaps, not recognize. But we stand by our record of consistently presenting musical splendour at The Rogue, and we offer a money back guarantee if you feel a show doesn't live up to our billing. Most of our concerts are also streamed, so if you can't make it to the venerable hall, why not watch at home instead?
I love it. Relationships matter above all: folkies know that they're playing the infinite game.
Only the presenters who present frequently enough that writing-off individual bombs is no big deal will make it. Analyzing every single outcome in your portfolio is a sure path to disappointment and an eventual exit from the game. Infidels Jazz, for example -- and there's no proprietary knowledge needed to make this observation -- makes enough hay from one or two shows each month to justify the time spent on all those smaller ones, no matter how the turnout ends up being.
